Captain's Newsletter
2nd April 2008
Dear Members,
This is my first newsletter since being voted in
as Captain at the AGM in February, and I would like to start by
wishing all our members a very successful golfing season in what
looks to be an exciting year ahead. I would also like to welcome
our new members to the Club, and invite you to an induction upstairs
in the front bar at 7pm on Thursday 24th April, where you will have
the workings of the Club explained and have the opportunity to meet
myself and other office bearers.
The Club has made great progress in the past few
years, and you will see the results yourselves on the course and
in the Clubhouse. Rest assured that the Club Council and sub-committees
will be working hard throughout the year to uphold and improve upon
the high standards we have set ourselves. There are further renovations
to the Clubhouse on the horizon, and we are also in the early stages
at looking at options to improve the facilities, perhaps by extending
the Clubhouse. You will, of course, be kept informed of any developments.
Regarding the course, we are awaiting a further tree planting programme
by Miller Homes, who built the houses bordering the 2nd fairway,
and this should provide additional screening. The greenkeeping staff
will be graduating the rough and have changed the type of sand in
the bunkers, as well as rebuilding several of them, along with two
of the tees. We have bought a two-seater buggy and will trial this
on the course this year – to hire for one round it will cost
£15 for members and £25 for non-members, and may be
booked with the Secretary. Rules have been drawn up for the use
of the buggy and I would ask all users to abide by these.
As the new playing season starts you will, I am sure, be happy with
the programme of competitions that lie ahead. You will receive a
fixture list when you pay your fees (must be paid by 30th April
at latest) and I wish everyone the best of luck in winning back
some money from the Club! Please remember though that if you put
your name down for a competition and subsequently find you cannot
make it to please inform the Match Secretary as soon as possible.
In the Clubhouse, we have an excellent social programme running
throughout the year, which I would recommend to anyone. Food served
by the chef is first class and is fast gaining an envious reputation;
tables can be reserved at weekends for romantic dinners for two
or for large family functions, and anything in between! Members
may “hire” our facilities for free for their own social
occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays and christenings, forms
to apply for these are available from the Secretary and should be
submitted to Council as early as possible.
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind all members
of the standards expected of them – please uphold the dress
code, both on the course and in the Clubhouse, and ensure your behaviour
and language remains acceptable.
Vandalism remains a problem on the course, especially in the area
of the loop. I recommend anyone golfing in the summer evenings,
especially ladies, take a mobile phone with them, and would encourage
everyone to report any vandalism or threatening behaviour immediately
to the police (tel: 01292 664000) and thereafter to the Secretary
– only by doing so are we likely to get anything done about
it.
Finally, I remind you all that this is your Club. If you have any
suggestions or constructive criticism then please feel free to put
them in writing and pass them to the Secretary for inclusion in
the next Council meeting – scheduled for the last Thursday
each month. I can assure you that Council is always pleased to hear
the views of the membership, and you will receive a written reply
to your letter.
